This week amid the smoke and heat, I have laughed, danced, and created with eight wonderful women. My Women Touched by Grace Reunion/Retreat has been a blessing in many ways. One of the most profound awarenesses is the determination and steadfastness to stay the course of connection and being together. We have known each other for eighteen years. One woman was scheduled to arrive Sunday evening and after several delays the flight was cancelled. She arrived 24 hours after her initial schedule. Another woman is leaving earlier than anticipated due to the oppressive weather on her health.

Last night we wanted to eat at the Troutdale Food Station to give everyone a chance to try their own flavor and enjoy a local experience. Unfortunately, the indoor seating was closed and only one food cart was open. We pivoted to the Fairview Food Station, which had more food choices. The garage doors to the indoor seating were open, allowing a free flow of smoke-filled air. After considering other restaurant options, we each ordered what we wanted and then ate at the best place ever - our host house where everyone enjoyed their own meal as we laughed, told more stories, and relished in our time together.

My musings this week have been centered on how we spent our time together. We did not have a schedule and yet, as community, we cultivated a beautiful experience. We took time to write cards for our “absent sisters,” the eleven unable to be with us. One person offered soul collage and dance, the host had created an altar space to center our hearts, and l led a morning meditation on rest. This evening, we will be going to watch the Indiana Fever at the Sports Bra.

As my “sisters” color beside me, I give thanks for the opportunity to be renewed with this time. It is in the stillness of communal presence, that I have felt the presence of God this week. I look forward to seeing y’all on Sunday. We will hear how God showed up to a weary Elijah. He longs to know his efforts were not in vain. Disappointment grows as Elijah looks for God in the noise and clatter of nature. God finally shows up in the sound of sheer silence. May you also be able to rest and listen for the presence of God.​
